Caroline Seger traded from Philadelphia to WNY Flash

The Philadelphia Independence have traded midfielder Caroline Seger to the WNY Flash for the Flash’s second round picks in this year’s and next year’s WPS Drafts. The Swedish international was the first pick in the 2009 WPS International Expansion Draft. With the Independence last season, Seger played in 18 games (17 starts), scored one goal, and had five assists.

“I’m excited about playing for the Flash next year,” Seger said. “The organization and management seems really professional. I´m looking forward to the challenges that we would be facing next year. My time in Philadelphia has been very fun, and I’ve found memories of a lifetime. I wish all the players and staff good luck in the future.”

Seger tied a WPS record July 14 with three assists against Sky Blue FC and helped lead the Independence to the 2010 WPS Championship game. She scored the equalizer in Philadelphia’s win over the Boston Breakers in the WPS Super Semifinal.

The 25-year-old Seger played for Linkoping FC in Sweden before coming to the WPS. The Swedish Women’s National Team captain has played for Sweden since 2005 where she has 62 caps and five goals. In her five years at Linkopings FC, Seger helped the team win the Swedish Cup (Svenska Cuppen) three times (2006, 2008, 2009). This year, at the Swedish Soccer Awards, Seger was named Midfielder of the Year.

Seger joins an impressive WNY Flash team, one that has signed Canadian internationals and former FC Gold Pride players Christine Sinclair and Candace Chapman, as well as former Gold Pride defender and 2010 WPS Rookie of the Year Ali Riley, McCall Zerboni, Ashlyn Harris, Whitney Engen, Brittany Cameron, Brittany Bock, Kandace Wilson, Beverly Goebel, and Kaley Fountain.
