Boston Breakers to retire Kristine Lilly’s No. 13

Kristine Lilly will become the first female professional athlete in Boston sports history to have her number retired when the Breakers honor the U.S. soccer legend at halftime of Sunday’s Breakers game against the Philadelphia Independence. She is also the first player in Women’s Professional Soccer (WPS) history to have her number retired. Lilly played for the Breakers in 2009 and 2010 and for the WUSA Breakers from 2001-2003. She is the most capped player in US Soccer history (men and women) with 352 international appearances for the United States Women’s National Team. (more…)

WPS week in review – playoff schedule released, Kristine Lilly night set for May 22 in Boston

Women’s Professional Soccer (WPS) announced the 2011 playoff format this week. Four teams will qualify for the postseason, which uses a tiered-format with the two top teams earning byes. The top team in the WPS regular season will receive the No. 1 seed and an automatic berth into the final and will host the 2011 WPS Championship. The championship game will take place Saturday, Aug. 27. In other WPS news this week, the Boston Breakers announced that they will retire Kristine Lilly’s number 13 at a halftime ceremony of the May 22nd game against the Philadelphia Independence. (more…)

Kristine Lilly announces her retirement from soccer

U.S. Women’s National Team midfielder Kristine Lilly has announced her retirement after a 24-year career. Lilly, who is the most capped player in all of U.S. Soccer with 352 appearances, played in five FIFA World Cups and recently played for the USWNT during the World Cup qualifiers. She scored her final and 130th international goal on May 22, 2010, in a game against Germany. (more…)
