Two first-half goals seal U.S. victory over Japan, but Americans lose Tarpley to ACL injury

Abby Wambach redirected a service from Ali Krieger off a set piece, and Amy Rodriguez put the finishing touches on a great buildup by Heather O’Reilly and Wambach to give the U.S. all it needed to defeat Japan, 2-0, Saturday night in Columbus, Ohio. But, unfortunately the U.S. was dealt a major blow as midfielder Lindsay Tarpley, who came on as a sub in the second half, tore her ACL in her right knee and will miss the 2011 Women’s World Cup.  (more…)

Abby Wambach, Heather O’Reilly, Pia Sundhage talk about 2011 World Cup

U.S. Head Coach Pia Sundhage, midfielder Heather O’Reilly, and forward Abby Wambach addressed the media today following the announcement of the U.S. Women’s National Team World Cup roster. Sundhage said it was difficult to narrow down the roster to 21 players, saying, “We have not picked the best 21 players. We picked the 21 players that will do the best together … (We’re) very happy with the 21 we picked and the fact that they are different from each other. Everyone has high expectations.” (more…)


U.S. wins Algarve Cup, Canada claims Cyprus Cup title

The U.S. Women’s National Team won its eighth Algarve Cup title with a 4-2, come-from-behind win over Iceland, while the Canadian Women’s National Team knocked off Holland, 2-1 in overtime, to win its third Cyprus Cup in the last four years. Japan and France finished in third place at Algarve and Cyprus, respectively. (more…)
