WPS roster report released

The roster report for week five in Women’s Professional Soccer (WPS) was released this morning. The first game of the weekend takes place Friday afternoon in Rochester, New York as visiting Sky Blue FC (0-2-1, 1 point) takes on the first-place Western New York Flash (2-0-1, 7 points). Sky Blue FC is without Kendall Fletcher and Lindsey Johnson, who are both injured. Meanwhile, the Flash will be without Christine Sinclair, who was not rostered for the game, as well as the injured Kaley Fountain and Alex Sahlen. Aaran Lines looking forward to 2011 WPS season for more reasons than one

Two days after the WNY Flash announced they acquired Marta’s contract, Head Coach Aaran Lines talked about the five-time FIFA World Player of the Year, how he and his staff compiled a team that features three national team captains, the 2010 WPS Rookie of the Year, some of the best internationals, and a handful of young talent. “I think if you go through our squad, not only have we brought in quality players, right next to their level of ability is their character,” Lines said. “And that’s important to Emma (Hayes), myself, and everyone here. U.S. holds off Canada, China tops Sweden in the second day of the Four Nations Tournament

The highly anticipated match between the U.S. and Canada at the Four Nations Tournament in Chongqing, China turned out to be a classic. The U.S. held off a surge by Canada in the final four minutes of stoppage time to hang on for the 2-1 win. Nicole Barnhart made a great save on a shot in the final seconds by Christine Sinclair to preserve the win. (more…)

U.S. falls to Sweden, Canada comes back from two goals down to beat China

The U.S. Women’s National Team suffered its second loss in its last five games, this time falling to Sweden, 2-1, to open the Four Nations Tournament in Chongqing, China. In the second game of the tournament, Canada fell behind 2-0 in the 36th minute, but came back to beat China, 3-2, on a stoppage-time goal by Christine Sinclair. (more…)

Canada crowned champions of Torneio Internacional de São Paulo

In front of an attendance of 18,326, Canada became Torneio Internacional de São Paulo champions with a 2-2 draw against Brazil. Canada won on goal differential. Brazil started the game without Cristiane and Grazielle, both injured, so the young 17-year-old Thais started the game, her first with the national team, while Canada had back its entire team. Western New York Flash sign Candace Chapman, McCall Zerboni, and Brittany Cameron

The Western New York Flash of Women’s Professional Soccer (WPS) agreed to terms today with former Gold Pride defender and Canadian international Candace Chapman, midfielder McCall Zerboni, formerly of the Atlanta Beat, and former Gold Pride keeper Brittany Cameron. (more…)
