Two first-half goals seal U.S. victory over Japan, but Americans lose Tarpley to ACL injury

Abby Wambach redirected a service from Ali Krieger off a set piece, and Amy Rodriguez put the finishing touches on a great buildup by Heather O’Reilly and Wambach to give the U.S. all it needed to defeat Japan, 2-0, Saturday night in Columbus, Ohio. But, unfortunately the U.S. was dealt a major blow as midfielder Lindsay Tarpley, who came on as a sub in the second half, tore her ACL in her right knee and will miss the 2011 Women’s World Cup.  (more…)

Lisa-Marie Woods: National Team and the upcoming World Cup

The Norwegian National team started their preparations a long time ago, and soon it will all be put to the test. We haven’t had as many days in camp as many of the other nations have, but we have gotten individual follow-up and gotten to play good games for our clubs. I wrote a blog from the Algarve Cup, saying we have a lot to work on before we consider ourselves ready for the World Cup, and when the team met up earlier this month, it was obvious that many had taken this to heart. Opening weekend for leagues around the globe

This weekend marks the start of several top-flight leagues from Women’s Professional (WPS) to the national women’s football league in Vietnam. Sweden’s Damallsvenskan and Finland’s Naisten Liiga are also amongst the group of leagues that begin play this weekend. (more…)


U.S. wins Algarve Cup, Canada claims Cyprus Cup title

The U.S. Women’s National Team won its eighth Algarve Cup title with a 4-2, come-from-behind win over Iceland, while the Canadian Women’s National Team knocked off Holland, 2-1 in overtime, to win its third Cyprus Cup in the last four years. Japan and France finished in third place at Algarve and Cyprus, respectively. (more…)


Another historic day at Algarve and Cyprus cups

In the second day of the Cyprus Cup, Scotland defeated England for the first time since 1977, scoring a 2-0 win on goals by Arsenal’s Kim Little and Jennifer Beattie. Keeper Shannon Lynn (Hibernian) earned the shutout for Scotland. Canadian keeper Stephanie Labbe (Pitea) picked up her fourth career shutout and remains unbeaten in six starts and Jonelle Filigno scored off an assist from Christine Sinclair (WNY Flash) to give Canada a 1-0 win over Italy. Atlanta Beat roster slowly taking shape

Women’s Professional Soccer announced Monday that the Atlanta Beat signed both Keeley Dowling and undrafted free agent forward Katie Bethke (University of Minnesota), who recently trained with the U.S. U-23 Women’s National Team. These two signings now bring the Beat’s roster up to 12 players. (more…)
