Furthering women's soccer like no magazine has done before

Western New York Flash sign Candace Chapman, McCall Zerboni, and Brittany Cameron

The Western New York Flash of Women’s Professional Soccer (WPS) agreed to terms today with former Gold Pride defender and Canadian international Candace Chapman, midfielder McCall Zerboni, formerly of the Atlanta Beat, and former Gold Pride keeper Brittany Cameron.

Chapman started 21 games for the 2010 WPS champions FC Gold Pride. She began her WPS career with the Boston Breakers, playing 11 games in 2009.

“Candace is a solid, reliable central defender with great international and WPS experience,” Flash Head Coach Aaran Lines said. “She has good size and athleticism and great character to top it off. It will also be nice to bring a Toronto area native to our squad as the Golden Horseshoe is so close to WNY.”

Zerboni started 15 games last year for the expansion Atlanta Beat, scoring two goals. In 2009, she scored one goal and had one assist in 10 appearances (four starts) for the Los Angeles Sol.

“McCall is a great addition to the squad,” Lines said. “Not only does she bring WPS experience from over the last two years, but she is an extremely versatile player who has the ability to play in either the back four or midfield.”

Cameron, who also played in 2009 on the Los Angeles Sol, started three games for FC Gold Pride this past season. She finished with a 1.00 goals against average.

“Brittany is a very athletic goalkeeper who I expect to push U.S. National Team goalkeeper Ashlyn Harris,” Lines said. “Brittany has some experience in the league and has clearly shown she can compete by being a member of two championship WPS squads.”

The Flash now have 10 players on their roster – Chapman, Zerboni, Cameron, Harris, Christine Sinclair, Ali Riley, Brittany Bock, Kandace Wilson, Beverly Goebel, and Kaley Fountain. They have said they intend to select U.S. Women’s National Team forward and California senior Alex Morgan.
