Allie Long talks to Our Game as WPS free agent signings heat up

Women’s Professional Soccer (WPS) free agency officially began Wednesday, Nov. 17, and since then a handful of players have signed, either with their current teams, or in the case of some players, such as Allie Long, they’ve inked deals with new teams.

Long talked to Our Game Magazine Friday about signing with Sky Blue FC. Long played the previous two seasons with the Washington Freedom. The midfielder started 21 games for the Freedom in 2010. She scored two goals and had one assist. The 23-year-old UNC grad will be playing close to home, having grown up in Northport, N.Y.

“I’m really excited to be able to play for Sky Blue FC,” Long said Friday morning. “I’m hoping I can help my team win another championship, and it’s always nice that my family and friends can watch me a lot more now.”

The Boston Breakers announced Thursday the signings of free agent defenders Rachel Buehler and Kasey Moore. Moore has played the last two seasons with the Breakers, while Buehler played two seasons with FC Gold Pride, the 2010 WPS champions. Buehler also is a member of the U.S. Women’s National Team.

Former Washington Freedom keeper Ashlyn Harris signed this week with the expansion Western New York Flash. In the recent Expansion Draft, the Flash selected defender Kaley Fountain from the Atlanta Beat and midfielder Beverly Goebel from the Washington Freedom. The Flash also unveiled their team logo.
