Former Saint Louis Athletica and Atlanta Beat keeper Hope Solo will soon be reunited with some of her teammates from the U.S. Women’s National Team, joining Abby Wambach, Christie Rampone, Lindsay Tarpley, and Shannon Boxx, on the team formerly known as the Washington Freedom, according to sources close to the league. Sky Blue FC of Women’s Professional Soccer have signed free agent Anita Asante. The English international was a member of the Sky Blue FC 2009 championship team where she played in 16 games as a central defender for the New Jersey club. The fan favorite was one of the key anchors of the 2009 Sky Blue defense.
Asante, 25, played for Washington, Chicago, and Saint Louis last season, ending the year with the Freedom. She was traded from Chicago to the Freedom on Aug. 5, 2010, and then started in five of six games for Washington. Asante played all 120 minutes of Washington’s playoff game against Philadelphia.
Sky Blue has had a busy offseason, having already signed midfielders Carolyn Blank and Allie Long. Long played last year for the Washington Freedom and is now reunited with former Freedom coach and current Sky Blue FC Head Coach Jim Gabarra.
