Damallsvenskan champions LdB Malmö settle for draw with KIF Örebro

Defending Swedish champions LdB Malmö opened up its 2011 Damallsvenskan season Sunday with a 1-1 draw against KIF Örebro at Behrn Arena in Örebro. After falling behind, 1-0, in the 24th minute on a goal by Örebro forward Sara Michael, Malmö needed a second-half strike to pull level and avoid defeat. Midfielder Nilla Fisher’s goal in the 61st minute tied the game for Malmö, salvaging the draw. The last time these teams met was in last year’s Super Cup, which Malmö won, 2-1, to claim the title of the champions of Sweden. (more…)


Opening weekend for leagues around the globe

This weekend marks the start of several top-flight leagues from Women’s Professional (WPS) to the national women’s football league in Vietnam. Sweden’s Damallsvenskan and Finland’s Naisten Liiga are also amongst the group of leagues that begin play this weekend. (more…)


LdB FC Malmö beats Sky Blue FC in Alanya Tournament of Champions

The 2010 Swedish Damallsvenskan champions LdB FC Malmö beat 2009 Women’s Professional Soccer (WPS) champs Sky Blue FC, 1-0, in the finals of the International Tournament of Champions Saturday in Alanya, Turkey. Sarah Storck scored in the 12th minute for Malmö. Sky Blue FC earned a spot in the finals after a shootout victory over Danish Elitedivisionen champions Fortuna Hjørring. In the third-place match, Russian side FC Energiya Voronezh beat Fortuna Hjørring, 2-0. (more…)


WPS update: rosters change, preseason games continue

Women’s Professional Soccer (WPS) preseason is in full swing, and on Monday, teams made a number of roster moves. On a day that was supposed to cut rosters down to 28, some teams added players from their initial preseason rosters that were announced back on March 1. In other WPS news, magicJack made its preseason debut Tuesday, and Sky Blue FC landed in Turkey for the Alanya Women’s Tournament of Champions. (more…)


Historic day at both Cyprus Cup and Algarve Cup

Kelly Smith won her 100th cap with England and scored in a 2-0 win over Italy at the Cyprus Cup, while Iceland beat Sweden for the first time ever, shocking the No. 4 FIFA ranked team in the world, 2-1, at the Algarve Cup in Portugal. In other action today at Algarve, the U.S. Women’s National Team beat Japan (2-1), Norway beat Finland (2-1), Denmark beat China (1-0), Portugal beat Wales (3-1), and Romania beat Chile (2-0). In Cyprus, Canada, France, South Korea, and the Netherlands won, while Russia and Mexico played to a scoreless draw. (more…)


Four Nations U-23 tournament update: U.S. draws with England, Sweden beats Norway

The second day of the U-23 Four Nations Tournament in La Manga produced a 1-1 draw between the U.S. and England and 3-1 win by Sweden over Norway. Sweden, which lost, 4-2, on Friday to the U.S., came out Sunday and took a 1-0 lead 12 minutes into the match on a goal from Sofia Jakobsson (Umeå IK). Norway’s Hege Hansen, who scored Norway’s lone goal in a 1-1 draw Friday against England, tied the match in the 24th minute. Less than 10 minutes later, Sweden’s Sarah Storck (LdB FC Malmö) scored what proved to be the game-winner. Before the first half ended, Sweden’s Linnea Liljegård (Kopparbergs/Göteborg FC) scored her team’s final goal. (more…)


LdB FC Malmö wins Jitex Cup

Swedish club Jitex BK of Damallsvenskan organized a four-team tournament that took place over the weekend at Valhalla Stadium in Gothenburg, Sweden, and the Swedish club made it to the finals before losing, 3-0, to reigning Damallsvenskan champions LdB FC Malmö. (more…)


Sky Blue FC midfielder Allie Long talks about her team’s upcoming trip to Turkey

Sky Blue FC midfielder Allie Long said she’s looking forward to going to Turkey in March with her new team as the club heads to the city of Antalya to play in a preseason tournament against LdB FC Malmö, FK Energiya, and Fortuna Hjørring. “I’m so hyped. I’ve never been to Turkey and pretty sure you wouldn’t catch me buying tickets to go on vacation there, but to be able to go with some of my closest friends while playing soccer is something I’m truly thankful for.” (more…)


Therese Sjögran will join Sky Blue FC during exhibition tournament in Turkey

Sky Blue FC will head to Turkey in March to play in a four-team exhibition tournament. The WPS club will face LdB FC Malmö of Damallsvenskan, Russian club FK Energiya, and Fortuna Hjørring from Denmark. At the tournament, LdB FC Malmö will officially loan out Therese Sjögran to Sky Blue FC, according to the Swedish club. (more…)


LdB FC Malmö in contact with Marta

According to LdB FC Malmö club director Niclas Carlnén, his club has had contact with the agent representing Brazilian forward, current Women’s Professional Soccer free agent, and five time FIFA World Player of the Year, Marta. LdB FC Malmö won the Damallsvenskan championship in 2010, and Marta was in Sweden in November to watch the club play. (more…)


Jitex Cup 2011 four-team tournament set for February in Sweden

Swedish club Jitex BK of Damallsvenskan have organized a four-team tournament that will be played Feb. 5 and 6 at Valhalla Stadium in Gothenburg, Sweden. Jitex Cup 2011 also features 2010 Damallsvenskan champions LdB FC Malmö, Fortuna Hjørring (2009-10 champions of Elitedivisionen in Denmark), and Norwegian side Kolbotn, which finished third in the 2010 Toppserien table. LdB FC Malmö midfielder Therese Sjögran signs with Sky Blue FC

Therese Sjögran has signed to play for Sky Blue FC of Women’s Professional Soccer (WPS). Sjögran will be out on loan from Swedish club LdB FC Malmö, the 2010 Damallsvenskan champions. Sjögran has played for LdB FC Malmö since 2001 and has 63 goals in more than 200 appearances with the club. A member of the Swedish National Team since 1997, Sjögran has more than 200 caps and 18 goals for Sweden. (more…)
