U.S. U-20s held scoreless for second straight game at Ten Nations Tournament, U-23s win Four Nations

The U.S. U-20 Women’s National Team drew, 0-0, with England today at the Ten Nations Tournament in La Manga, Spain, two days after playing a scoreless 45 minutes against Sweden. The match against Sweden, according to midfielder Samantha Mewis, was canceled after halftime due to thunder and lightning. After training Saturday, the U-20s got back into action today against England. The U.S. had opportunities, but Mewis said they’re having a hard time finishing. (more…)


Four Nations U-23 tournament update: U.S. draws with England, Sweden beats Norway

The second day of the U-23 Four Nations Tournament in La Manga produced a 1-1 draw between the U.S. and England and 3-1 win by Sweden over Norway. Sweden, which lost, 4-2, on Friday to the U.S., came out Sunday and took a 1-0 lead 12 minutes into the match on a goal from Sofia Jakobsson (Umeå IK). Norway’s Hege Hansen, who scored Norway’s lone goal in a 1-1 draw Friday against England, tied the match in the 24th minute. Less than 10 minutes later, Sweden’s Sarah Storck (LdB FC Malmö) scored what proved to be the game-winner. Before the first half ended, Sweden’s Linnea Liljegård (Kopparbergs/Göteborg FC) scored her team’s final goal. (more…)


U.S. tops Sweden, England and Norway draw in opening matches of U-23 Four Nations Tournament

Notre Dame forward Melissa Henderson scored two goals for the U.S. U-23 Women’s National Team in its 4-2 win Friday over Sweden at the Four Nations Tournament in La Manga, Spain. Sarah Hagen (UW-Milwaukee) and Casey Noguiera (Sky Blue FC) also scored for the U.S., while Sofia Jakobsson and Emma Berglund, who both play for Umeå IK, scored for Sweden. (more…)


Ten WPS players on U-23 roster that will play in Four Nations Tournament

The U.S. U-23 Women’s National Team will head to La Manga, Spain, from Feb. 21 to March 2, for the Four Nations Tournament. The U.S. will compete against England, Norway, and Sweden’s U-23s. Of the 18 players on coach Bill Irwin’s roster, 10 are on Women’s Professional Soccer (WPS) rosters. (more…)


Stephanie Labbe returns from China and returns with another blog

Canadian keeper Stephanie Labbe landed back home after her team’s flight to Canada from China following the Four Nations Tournament. Labbe and the Canadian Women’s National Team finished with a 2-1 record in China. On the final day of the tournament, Labbe and Canada shut out Sweden, 1-0. (more…)


The U.S. wins Four Nations Tournament in China

It all came down to the final day of the Four Nations Tournament in Chongqing, China to decide a champion, and with the U.S. Women’s National Team’s 2-0 victory over China, the U.S. won the tournament. Canada beat Sweden, 1-0, earlier in the day, so it came down to tiebreakers as both teams were tied for first place with 2-1 records. The first tiebreaker was initially goal difference, followed by goals scored, and then head-to-head, but that was changed prior to the tournament, according to U.S. Soccer. Head-to-head was the first tiebreaker, and since the U.S. beat Canada, the U.S. was crowned tournament champions. (more…)


Four Nations Tournament tiebreaker scenarios

All four teams in the Four Nations Tournament in Chongqing, China have a chance to become tournament champions. After two games, the U.S., Canada, Sweden, and China all have 1-1 records. Monday, the U.S. plays China and Sweden takes on Canada. Certain results will lead to a number of tiebreaker scenarios that will ultimately decide the champion. (more…)

U.S. holds off Canada, China tops Sweden in the second day of the Four Nations Tournament

The highly anticipated match between the U.S. and Canada at the Four Nations Tournament in Chongqing, China turned out to be a classic. The U.S. held off a surge by Canada in the final four minutes of stoppage time to hang on for the 2-1 win. Nicole Barnhart made a great save on a shot in the final seconds by Christine Sinclair to preserve the win. (more…)

The U.S. Women’s National Team faced Sweden Friday to open the Four Nations Tournament in Chongqing, China, at Yongchuan Sports Centre Stadium. Canada then takes on China at 5:35 a.m. Eastern time. (Check back in the morning for results). (more…)


Rosters announced for Four Nations Tournament in China

The U.S., Canada, and Sweden women’s national team rosters have been announced ahead of the Four Nations Tournament, which takes place from Jan. 21-Jan. 25. Teams arrived as early as Thursday, Jan. 13, in Chongqing, China, to begin training. Canada, the U.S., Sweden, and China will compete in the tournament. Here are the rosters …

Four Nations Tournament and Cyprus Women’s Cup highlight the start of 2011

Seven teams competing in the 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup begin 2011 with a pair of tournaments. The U.S., Canada, and Sweden will take part in the Four Nations Tournament in mid-January in Chongqing, China, while England, North Korea, New Zealand, and France will play in the Cyprus Cup in February/March. Canada, Brazil open with wins at Torneio Internacional Cidade de Sao Paulo

Torneio Internacional Cidade de Sao Paulo opened today in Sao Paulo, Brazil. The four-team tournament features Brazil, Canada, the Netherlands, and Mexico. Canada began the tournament with a 5-0 win over the Netherlands. Christine Sinclair, who signed today with the Western New York Flash of Women’s Professional Soccer, scored two goals for Canada as did Diana Matheson (Lillestrøm SK Kvinner). Josee Belanger (Amiral de Québec) also scored for Canada, and keeper Stephanie Labbe (Pitea) earned the shutout. Diamond Simpson, recently called up from the Canadian U-18 camp, earned her first international cap.  (more…)
