Irish international Julie-Ann Russell talks about joining new W-League team LA Strikers
The LA Strikers will make their W-League debut this season, and Monday the team signed four international players – Alisha Foote (Brisbane Roar of Australia’s W-League), Katie Tarrant (England – Chelsea), and two Irish internationals – Cherelle Khassal (Arsenal) and Julie-Ann Russell, formerly of the Irish club Salthill Devon. The final whistle sees Brisbane celebrate a second championship

Led by the player of the match Tameka Butt, the Brisbane Roar have reclaimed the Westfield W-League title courtesy of a hard-fought 2-1 win over Sydney FC at Campbelltown Stadium. For the Roar, it was sweet revenge for last season’s grand final loss to the same team, and it makes them the first team to win two W-League championships. (more…)
Tina Ellertson, Atlanta Beat terminate contract, magicTalk signs three more players
Tina Ellertson and the Atlanta Beat have mutually terminated their contract, while magicTalk SC signed Megan Schnur, Sarah Huffman, and Australian Lisa DeVanna, who has played the past two years with the club formerly known as the Washington Freedom. In other WPS news, the league officially announced that the Atlanta Beat signed Cat Whitehill and that Sky Blue FC has signed Swedish international Therese Sjögran, who join the team in Turkey next month. Australia’s best female footballers will be on display this weekend when two of the Westfield W-League’s powerhouse clubs meet again in the grand final. Defending champions Sydney FC will face off against Season One champions Brisbane Roar this Saturday at Campbelltown Stadium. (more…)

It took a drama filled penalty shootout but the Brisbane Roar have qualified for the 2010/11 Westfield W-League Grand Final after defeating Canberra United 4-2 (pen) at Ballymore Stadium. For the Roar, it will be their third appearance in the decider, which is a superb effort considering the League has only had the three seasons. (more…)
Sydney FC and Brisbane Roar earn right to host semifinals
With their victories over the weekend, both Sydney FC and Brisbane Roar qualified for the W-League semifinals. Sydney FC, the 2010 W-League champions, beat Canberra United, 3-0, this weekend, getting two own goals and a goal from Kyah Simon. Brisbane Roar played to a scoreless draw with the Newcastle Jets. Newcastle keeper Allison Lipsher picked up the shutout in goal, and prevented the Roar from winning the Premiership. (more…)
Brisbane opens 2011 with huge win over Sydney in W-League action
Brisbane Roar got a goal in the 50th minute from Joanne Burgess Saturday at Campbelltown Stadium, and it held up as the Roar beat Sydney FC for the first time in more than two years. The win moves Brisbane four points clear of second-place Sydney in the Westfield W-League (Australia). (more…)
Brisbane Roar look to snap Sydney FC curse and to remain in first place in Australia’s W-League
The two teams that met in last year’s W-League Grand Final and then in round one of this year’s W-League season, will face each other Saturday, Jan. 1, in a game that will give one team a significant upper hand heading into the final four weeks of the 2010/11 season. The Brisbane Roar look to retain their spot at the top of the table, while second-place Sydney FC needs only a draw to pull level with the Roar. (more…)
