This weekend saw just little action in the highest German women’s soccer division. The focus was on the two national cup semifinals. As expected, 1.FFC Frankfurt defeated SC Bad Neuenahr, 3-1. With goals from Conny Pohlers and Sandra Smisek, the game was on track for Frankfurt even after a quarter hour. Kerstin Garefrekes added a third goal after 58 minutes before FFC had to face a minor shock – not Bad Neuenahr’s goal by Lena Goeßling (62nd) hit them, but the ejection against center back Saskia Bartusiak (foul as last player) who will now miss the cup final. Now there are only two games left to play, and still neither Potsdam nor Frankfurt are showing any weaknesses. Both teams dominated their games and won very evidently. On the bottom end of the standings, Herforder SV now is without a mathematical chance to stay in the league. Turbine Potsdam had a home game against struggling 1.FC Saarbrücken. Two goals before halftime led the way, and after the break they demolished their relegation endangered opponent. Japanese international Yuki Nagasato scored a hat trick within 22 minutes. Final score was 7-0. (more…)

No less than five makeup games were scheduled for the middle of this week in German Bundesliga. Turbine Potsdam defended its place on top of the standings Tuesday after a 5-2 win at SC Bad Neuenahr. Potsdam led 2-0 at halftime, but Bad Neuenahr equalized until the 60th minute. The match winner for Potsdam was Lira Bajramaj (she was taken out on Sunday, a major injury was suspected, even the World Cup participation was endangered, according to reports). But on Monday, the relieve followed as Bajramaj played and scored four goals against Bad Neuenahr. (more…)

Before the regular league action resumed during this week, there were two cup quarterfinals as well as one make-up game on the schedule. In the cup competition 1.FFC Frankfurt had an easy task to solve. They travelled to sixth-place 2. Bundesliga club FSV Gütersloh. The giant favorites, who announced the signing of Swiss striker Ana Maria Crnogorcevic (Hamburger SV) that day, had no problem to qualify, but struggled more than expected in a 4-0 win with the first three goals coming off set pieces.
